Streamlining Your Practice: A Guide to the Updated IRS Business Tax Account

Recently, the IRS announced an update to its Business Tax Account website. These are some of many updates to the IRS interface that will be arriving over the next few years. This process began back in 2022 when the digital first initiative was funded by the Inflation Reduction Act.

Historically, the IRS has experienced issues with paper backlogs, processing millions of tax documents and correspondence items manually year over year. Since the beginning, the IRS stored every page of historical document requiring thousands of workers to manually enter and pull documents by hand. The IRS is now beginning to optimize electronic access and delivery to best assist taxpayers. These latest updates represent a significant step forward.

Streamlining Management with the Online Dashboard

The Business Tax Account (BTA) functions as a centralized online dashboard designed to save time and provide an accurate snapshot of your tax obligations. From the homepage, business owners and authorized representatives can easily:

  • View and address the current account balance
    • This includes payments for returns filed in the current year, late payments for past tax years, and federal tax deposits.
    • Bank accounts can now be stored in an online “wallet” to manage future tax payments.
  • Review past payments
    • Payments can be examined to see if they were returned or refused.
  • Pull tax transcripts
  • Download your own EIN verification letter
    • Designated officials can instantly access and download official verification notices directly from the portal, eliminating the traditional hassle of calling the IRS or sending a Letter 147C by mail when opening bank accounts or setting up payroll.
  • Request a tax compliance check
  • Examine notices and letters
  • Manage account authorizations

Enhanced Notice Tracking and Protection

An incredibly useful addition Is the dedicated section to view IRS tax notices and letters concerning your business, including updates regarding refunds and extensions.

Having an online record of notices gives the taxpayers and their representatives an added layer of protection and peace of mind, ensuring that important deadlines will not be missed if physical paper correspondence is delayed or lost in the mail.

Multi-Business Organization and Access Control

Managing multiple entities is also much more streamlined. Each business has its own dashboard for easy organization and accessibility.

To see a list of all accessible businesses you can click the drop down with your business name on it. From there any authorized representatives or owners can seamlessly add a business to their account profile.

The IRS has expanded BTA support to accommodate the following entity structures:

  • Sole Proprietorship (with an EIN)
  • Partnerships (with limited partner/k-1 viewing access)
  • C Corporation
  • S Corporation
  • Federal, state, and Local Governments
  • Indian tribal governments
  • Tax-exempt organizations

Looking Ahead: Setting Up Your Account

The IRS will continue to roll out digital enhancements over the next few years as they intend for BTA to become an online self-service platform. Setting up your Business Tax Account now is one of the best ways to stay ahead of compliance deadlines. If you have not yet registered, you can visit the IRS website (linked below) to verify your identity and gain immediate access to your digital dashboard. Future updates are expected to expand access to more business and organizational entities.
