Disaster Relief Deadlines

Depending upon their location, disaster-area taxpayers who received extensions to file their 2023 returns have returns due by May 1, 2025.

  • Eligible taxpayers in the entire states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, and parts of Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia will have until May 1, 2025, to file their 2023 returns. For these taxpayers, May 1 will also be the deadline for filing their 2024 returns and paying any tax due. Taxpayers that have an estimated income tax payment originally due on or after Aug. 22, 2024, are also postponed through May 1.

Additionally, the IRS announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in southern California affected by the wildfires.

  • The tax relief postpones various tax filing and payment deadlines that occurred from Jan. 7, 2025, through Oct. 15, 2025 (postponement period). As a result, affected individuals and businesses will have until Oct. 15, 2025, to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period.

It is important to note that this relief is available due to the catastrophic nature of the natural disasters in the past few months, including hurricanes, wildfires, and flooding. Taxpayers impacted by these events may also be eligible to claim casualty losses on their returns. If you have experienced damage to your property, you may be able to deduct these losses, subject to specific calculations and criteria.
